DETROIT – July 8, 2012 – The Michigan Premiere of GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES by Rajiv Joseph will open on July 27, 2012 at The Elizabeth Theater, located above the Park Bar, 2040 Park Avenue, Detroit at 8:00PM. The play, which stars Peter Prouty as Doug and Kelly Komlen-Amadei as Kayleen, will run through Sunday, August 12.

About the play

GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES by Rajiv Joseph charts the intersection of two lives using scars, wounds, and calamity as the mile markers to explore why people hurt themselves to gain another’s love and the cumulative effect of such damage. The play opens with the characters at age 8, and through alternating leaps of 15 years forward and 10 years backwards, we end with the characters at age 38.

About the production

GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES by Rajiv Joseph is being produced, directed, acted, and designed entirely by Wayne State students of past and present. The idea for the project comes from Jordan Whalen, a 2011 graduate of Wayne State’s MFA acting program. Not wanting to deal with the pressures of starting an entire theatre company, he looked into producing the play on his own. Mr. Whalen looked to gather a group of friends interested in an ensemble-driven artistic process. He cast fellow Hilberry alum Peter Prouty and former Bonstelle alum Kelly Komlen-Amadei for his two actors. To fill out his artistic team, he enlisted Hilberry and Bonstelle students, Sara Hymes, Brian Scruggs, and Devon Davey.

Mr. Whalen has directed several plays over the last year, including JOY and THE ART PLAY for RAW Festival and THE LAST EGG for Tipping Point’s Sandbox 2012 Play Festival. Mr. Prouty has seemingly performed everywhere this past year, from his Wilde Award-nominated performance in OH, HELL! at The Abreact, to his role as Algernon in Tipping Point’s THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST. Mrs. Komlen-Amadei has received the Wilde Award for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance as Claire in PROOF at Tipping Point in 2011.

GRUESOME PLAYROUND INJURIES opens Friday, July 27 at 8:00PM and runs Sundays and Thursdays through August 12 at the Elizabeth Theater, located above the Park Bar at 2040 Park Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201.
