Coming Soon: The Misanthrope

On January 28, 2011 the Hilberry Theatre Company will open Tim Mooney’s adaptation of Molière’s The Misanthrope, running in rotating repertory until March 5, 2011.  Tickets are $25-$30 and are available by calling the Hilberry Theatre Box Office at 313-577-2972, online at www.hilberry.com, or by visiting the box office at 4743 Cass Ave. on the corner of Cass Ave. and Hancock.

The Hilberry company continues to deliver what its audiences want to see.  In planning the current season, patrons were asked which shows they would prefer to see and Molière was a top pick.  The most recent Hilberry production of a Molière play was season 2001-2002’s production of The Learned Ladies.

Alceste has a problem: he’s in love with the beautiful Celimene.  While that may be enough of a problem for most men, he has an even bigger problem with society.  Alceste is a misanthrope and he absolutely despises society and its current conventions.  He cannot tolerate others saying one thing to his face and something else behind his back.  Alceste vows to speak only the truth, regardless of the consequences.  Celimene seems to think that there is nothing wrong with society; in fact she represents everything Alceste despises.

The Misanthrope cast members include Andrew Papa (Alceste), Dave Toomey (Philinte), Alan Ball (Oronte), Vanessa Sawson (Celimene), Samantha Rosentrater (Eliante), Lorelei Sturm (Arsinoe), Jordan Whalen (Acaste), Edmund Alyn Jones (Clitandre), Jason Cabral (Basque), and Christopher Ellis (Du Bois).

The production team includes Jesse Merz (Director), Tara Westlake (Production Stage Manager), Mercedes Coley (Assistant Stage Manager), John D. Woodland (Costume Designer), Michael Wilkki (Associate Scenic Designer), Jacee Rohlck (Assistant Scenic Designer), Brian Scruggs (Lighting Designer), Jonathan Weaver (Master Electrician), Jason Pratt (Sound Designer), Peter Schmidt (Technical Director), Rudy Schuepbach (Props Master), Michael Barnes (Voice and Speech Coach), Nira Pullin (Movement Coach), Michael Butterworth (Dramaturge), and Bobby Lima (Publicity Manager).
