Musical double feature opens at Hilberry Theatre

Press in the Daily Tribune, serving Southeastern Oakland County

On Sept. 23, the Hilberry Theatre opens its 49th season with the musical double feature “A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine.” The Tony-nominated musical runs selected dates through Oct. 15, at the theater on the Wayne State University campus in Detroit.

“A Day in Hollywood” provides an “inspiring red carpet musical tribute to the screen stars and productions of the 1930s.” The first act takes place at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, while the second act, “A Night in the Ukraine,” transports the audience to a black-and-white “film” loosely based on Anton Chekhov’s “The Bear.” The result is the “funniest musical the Marx Brosthers never wrote, featuring all the usual, zany suspects.”

Included in the cast are Carollette Phillips, from left, Andrew Papa and Dave Toomey.

Tickets, $12-$30, are available through the theater box office, 4743 Cass Ave. at Hancock, by calling (313) 577-2972, or online at
